Distinguished and Famous people from Uluru and Yulara

🎨 Rene Kulitja

Rene Kulitja developed her artistic work at Mutitjulu after earlier years in northern South Australia and Docker River. Her parents, woodcarvers Walter Pukutiwara and Topsy Tjulyata, were among the founders of Maruku Arts. Kulitja became a founding director of Walkatjara Art and has worked across painting, weaving, ceramics, glass and fabric. One of her designs travelled particularly far when it appeared on a Qantas aircraft. As a Tjanpi Desert Weaver she also participated in the 2015 Venice Biennale. Her work combines bold colour with stories of Tjukurpa, alongside leadership in local arts organisations and advocacy for her community.

🗣️ Sammy Wilson

Yankunytjatjara man Sammy Wilson has combined cultural tourism with a substantial role in managing Uluru–Kata Tjuta National Park. The park's 2018–19 annual report records him as a Mutitjulu resident, grandson of senior custodian Paddy Uluru, and operator of Uluru Family Tours. He joined the board of management in 2008 and became chair in 2014. Guiding visitors offered a way to share knowledge while maintaining the cultural practices of his ancestors. His public work placed local Anangu perspectives at the centre of discussions about how visitors experience a place that is also a living cultural landscape.
